Knocking off my part of the UIS task list at
http://www.karto.ethz.ch/~an/caving/cavexml/tasks.html
to wit, "Each existing worker to post a "summary" of what they have
done, as well as point us to their detail, e.g. via their web page."
The objective of the "Cave Survey Data in XML" effort is to work with
cave survey software developers to build an XML format for representing
cave survey data. Such a product would ease the exchange and storage of
survey data while increasing processing options.
Begun in early November 2000, the effort uses an iterative approach
that evolves the product based upon proposal and feedback from the
community of interested survey software authors.
Accomplishments to date include -
-proposal white paper (http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/caml.html)
-preliminary analysis of existing formats,
(http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/Analysis.html,
http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/OtherWorks.html)
-a collection of basic requirements,
(www.psc-cavers.org/xml/Requirements.html)
-agreement upon the inital list of necessary data elements (frequently
expanding), (http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/CaveSurveyElementsv01.html)
-organization of the elements into a workable document structure,
(http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/CaveSurveyElementsv02.html)
-development of a DTD section to describe valid elements,
(http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/CaveSurveyElementsv03.html)
-incorporation of new element tags, attributes and a proposed Xpointer
solution (http://www.psc-cavers.org/xml/CaveSurveyElementsv04.html)
Future plans - Cave Survey Data in XML will continue to work with
software developers to build a solution that meets their needs to the
greatest degree possible. The project will contribute commentary and
proposals to the UIS effort with regard to the Survey Data segment of
CaveXML and will work toward conformance with a UIS developed XML
baseline should such a product be developed.
