I believe mapping terminology is that "large-scale" is something like
1:125000, i.e. a large number; something that covers a large area.

That is for sure.
I'm not sure I have a strong opinion about cross sections, other than
to suggest a way to think about it is.
Does the current format provide a location where the current version,
a future version or an extension of CaveXML could place and deal with
each of the variations mentioned?
1. simple LRCF
2. cataloged simplified cross-sections
3. occasional 'representative cross sections' as a digitized set of
lines.
4. cross sections at all survey stations
5. cross sections associated with all stations, that can be
moved up and down the survey line using various additional
parameters.
The one thing is that a nestable set of elements is required
to allow a <point> ( or <shot> ) to optionally contain 2,3,4 or 5.
