Thanks for checking this, I've briefly used two diffrent free XML
editors, but
never with ID/IDREF.

This doesn't address what John already mentioned: IDREF can point at
anything, while a unique point ID of some kind is trying to identify
points only.

It seems to me that in a big enough cave system, a unique point ID
might certainly refer to something in another physical file. This
to me only adds to the marks against using XML IDs and IDREFs for
giving unique IDs to points.
