Hi All,
My apologies for the long absence - apart from being away, there has been
other urgent speleo work in progress which also had to be fitted into the
time left after my non-speleo :-( paid work.
There have been a lot of good points made since the diagram went up, and we
will certainly be revisiting them when we come to them while working
through the diagram.
Also, Richard has made quite a few good points to me about the draft web
page for 'task progress', and I will be modifying the page accordingly.
Part of the page was an area for "Other Definitions", i.e. terms which it
would be helpful for us to agree on prior to our discussion setting up a
list of what entities and fields we need to cover in our CaveXML spec. A
bunch of new terms came out of the discussion, but no one took up my
suggestion to settle them while I was away, so we'll do them now and I can
then include them on the updated web page.
There are two lots of terms - different types or stages of survey data, and
then the terms 'entity' and 'field' themselves. I'll list all the proposed
definitions, then focus on one at a time for resolution. I'll send a
separate email for this with a different title, to make the thread easier
to track.
We can then have a quick review of the Suggested Plan shown on the web page
for the current main task (6. Decide on the range of fields needed in a
survey or mapping data transfer), and then start actioning the plan.
Also, Martin Laverty has very kindly been working away on all the issues
which have been raised during past discussions, and has prepared a new web
page which summarises each issue, and links to its thread in the discussion
web archive. This page will also be loaded shortly. Thanks very much, Martin!
Could I also remind those who have already done work on cave-related XML to
send me a summary paragraph of your work and a link to any web page showing
it in more detail so that we can include it on a web page on our CaveXML
site, as per our Task 3:
"3. Catch up with the work already done in this area
Each existing worker is invited to post a summary paragraph of what they
have done. If they also have a web page, this should be linked to from
their summary."
Again, apologies for my long absence. I hope we can move forward steadily
now and actually make a few decisions. As above, my next email will be
regarding "other definitions".
Peter
