I would like to think of "Field data" as the original data. Any questions
about correctness of transcription for example would be resolved by looking
at the Field data. This view creates a problem with instruments which
automatically recording in the field. If there is sufficient error
checking in the process that downloads the data from these instruments,
then the resulting computer file can be trusted to be a true copy of the
original data. Otherwise, the data in the instruments would have to be
consulted if a question arose about the download.
