Bill makes an important point not specifically mentioned in the proposed
definition, namely that it's the "original" data. I'm not personally
familiar with them, but also allowing for instruments which actually store
the data before downloading for further processing, and taking into account
the next definition (raw data), is the following acceptable for the *first*
definition below, "field" data?

Raw data Field data when converted unchanged into character-based
