The Field Data already says "images thereof". No I think it is way to
pedantic to claim JPG is character based. Do you have a suggestion for a
away to simply capture the idea? Is maybe "text based" a better phrase?
I see that the XML web site (http://www.w3.org/XML/) opens with the phrase:
"Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format..."
But maybe Richard is bringing up a possible confusion.
The original book or the data in the instrument is field data, but if you
copy a book (on a scanner) and send someone the image it is still "field
data", but if you electronically copy whatever the instrument spits out it
has moved to "raw data". But this actually makes sense to me now that the
I have clarified that these definitions don't cover format, because the
third way to copy the field data is to type it into your favorite cave
mapping software. This new 'text-based' data would then (according to
these definitions) be refered to as the 'raw data' whether its in SMAPS,
Compass or CaveML and whatever you typed it from is refered to as the
'field data'.
So say it again, "as is" from the instrument in the instruments format is
raw data and made into SMAPS, Compass or WinKarst format is still raw data,
but in a new format.
Have I used the terms as Peter has defined them? Would everyone find that
these are the way the terms should be used to avoid confusion and
commmunicate clearly?
